Brahma Hen
The Brahma hen is a majestic, gentle giant known for her impressive size, calm demeanor, and excellent cold tolerance. She’s a favorite among backyard flocks for both her beauty and her consistent egg-laying ability, even in winter months.
Appearance:
- Size: Large and heavy-bodied, averaging 8–10 pounds.
- Feathering: Thick, soft feathers cover the entire body — including feathered legs and feet.
- Color Varieties: Most common are Light, Buff, and Dark Brahmas.
- Comb: Small pea comb, ideal for cold weather.
- Legs/Beak: Yellow feathered legs and feet, yellow beak.
Temperament:
- Extremely docile and friendly — one of the calmest breeds.
- Great with children and easy to handle.
- Quiet and gets along well with other chickens, even in mixed flocks.
Egg Production:
- Good layers of medium to large brown eggs.
- Lays around 150–200 eggs per year.
- Known to lay well even during the colder months.
- May go broody and makes a reliable mother.
Purpose:
- Dual-purpose breed: Excellent for both egg production and meat due to their large size.
- Commonly kept for their gentle nature and ornamental presence.
Care Notes:
- Cold-hardy thanks to dense feathering and pea comb.
- Needs dry bedding and a clean run to protect feathered feet from mud and moisture.
- Because of their size, make sure roosts and nesting boxes are low and accessible.
