The Cochin hen is a beloved backyard favorite, admired for her fluffy appearance, gentle temperament, and excellent mothering abilities. With her full feathering and calm nature, she adds charm and personality to any flock.

Appearance:

• Build: Round, heavily feathered, and large-bodied — she has a classic “fluffy ball” look.
• Feathering: Abundant feathers cover her entire body, including her legs and feet.
• Color Varieties: Comes in many beautiful colors like Buff, Black, Blue, White, Partridge, and more.
• Comb: Small single comb.
• Legs/Feet: Feathered yellow legs and toes, wide stance.

Temperament:

• Extremely docile, sweet, and friendly — easy to tame and handle.
• Great around kids and does well in mixed flocks.
• Known for being calm and quiet, making her ideal for urban or suburban settings.

Egg Production:

• Moderate layer of medium-sized brown eggs.
• Lays about 150–180 eggs per year.
• Often goes broody and makes an excellent mother.

Purpose:

• Primarily ornamental and companion bird, but also valued for brooding and light egg production.
• Too gentle and slow for competitive free-ranging, but perfect for backyard or enclosed runs.

Care Notes:

• Cold-hardy due to thick feathers but can struggle in hot, humid climates.
• Needs dry bedding and clean ground to keep feathered feet healthy.
• Can be prone to obesity if overfed, due to low activity level.
